Hammertoes and Bone Spurs

Hammertoes and bone spurs could also be grouped under arthritis in many cases. Hammertoes, bonespurs, and exostosis all often result from imbalance of muscle structures of the foot's toes. If your feet's toes become crooked, bent, or buckle under causing joints to protrude, you will experience biomechanical imbalance.

While heredity can be a factor in these foot conditions, usually it is improper shoes that precipitate these conditions. In diabetics, or people with poor foot circulation, hammertoes can become serious. Foot infections can ensue and the hammertoes can become the source of an eventual loss of a limb. If foot corns develop over a hammertoe, it is usually resulting from pressure between the toes and improper shoes.

If you suspect a foot infection might be present, care from a podiatrist, orthopedist, or family doctor should be sought. If your foot's deformity is permanent and causing constant foot pain, surgical correction utilizing a tenotomy, capsulotomy or arthroplasty (realigning the bone) is the next stage of treatment.

Hammertoes are repairable, but sometimes pins and wires are necessary. If your toes become severely deformed your doctor will often recommend an implant to be placed inside the joint to help maintain alignment. Proper Shoes is always the most important aspect in avoiding foot complications that can lead to hammertoes and bone spurs.
